What were some of your first thoughts when you found out you were pregnant?

Mine were, I need to start eating healthier, drinking more water and eating less junk and sugary drinks. That may be at top of your list, too.

We know eating more vegetables, fruits and protein along with drinking lots of water are so good for our health, especially during pregnancy and the health of our baby. But, did you know there are other things we put in our bodies that affects our health and our baby’s health?

Some women might give up smoking cigarettes during pregnancy and think taking up electronic cigarettes (vaping) as a healthier option because of the nicotine, but is it really healthier? Studies have shown that vaping use during pregnancy is unsafe. E-cigarettes are largely unregulated, so the nicotine dose varies widely and may not match what the label says. Nicotine can permanently damage a baby’s developing brain and many other organs. The liquid in e-cigarette’s also contains chemicals, flavors, and other additives that may not be safe for you or your baby.

Here are some of the risks of vaping:

1) Increase the chance of miscarriage.
2) Potential for premature birth.
3) Can cause birth defects.
4) Poor growth in the babies.
5) Lung issues.
6) Unknown chemical effects.
7) May cause long-term behavior or learning problems for the baby.

While we watch what we eat and drink to protect our babies, let’s not put added nicotine, chemicals or additives in our bodies that could potentially hurt them.
