I think one of the biggest fears in pregnancy is losing your baby.
Are you pregnant and have that fear?
If you are, let’s talk about what a miscarriage is and what to expect.
What is a miscarriage?
A miscarriage is when you lose a pregnancy and 8 out of 10 miscarriages happen before the 20h week of pregnancy.
What are the signs of a miscarriage?
Cramping and spotting can be a normal part of pregnancy, but if you have bleeding like a period, have severe belly pain or severe cramping it’s important to see your doctor right away just to be on the safe side. In some cases there are no signs that you are having or had a miscarriage until you have an ultrasound done or you don’t feel pregnant anymore.
What happens during a miscarriage?
Every miscarriage can be different for each person. They’re not all painful, but most will have some cramping. It’s also common to have vaginal bleeding and to pass large blood clots. This can be very scary, but it’s a normal part of the miscarriage. Be sure to reach out to your doctor and keep him updated on how you’re doing. He can also prescribe you medicine to help with the pain if needed.
What are the causes of miscarriages?
It’s hard to say why a miscarriage happens, but it’s usually not from feeling stressed, having sex, exercising or falling, but more likely when the fertilized egg has an abnormal number of chromosomes (genes). This happens in about half of miscarriages. Other causes, certain illnesses like severe diabetes, serious infection, a major injury, or fibroid tumors in your uterus may cause a late miscarriage. Most times there is nothing you could have done to prevent it, so please don’t feel guilty.
